Beeswax vs. Soy vs. Coconut Wax: Which Candle Wax Is Actually Cleanest?
If you've started paying attention to what's in your candles, you've probably run into this question pretty quickly. Once you've ruled out paraffin — and if you've read anything about candle safety, you probably have — you're left with three main alternatives: beeswax, soy wax, and coconut wax.
Each one gets marketed as the "clean" choice. Each one has genuine strengths. And each one has tradeoffs that most candle brands would rather you didn't know about.
Here's an honest, detailed comparison — including why we chose beeswax for every Candle Stork candle, and what that decision actually means.
First: Why Paraffin Isn't on This List
We're not going to spend much time on paraffin here — we cover it in depth in our post on toxic candle ingredients — but the short version is this: paraffin is a petroleum byproduct that can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when burned, and it makes up the majority of candles sold globally, including many that carry "luxury" price tags.
The three waxes below are genuinely different. They're plant-derived or naturally produced, they burn cleaner, and they're a meaningful step up for anyone prioritizing indoor air quality. But they're not all equal — and the differences matter.
Soy Wax: The Popular Choice
Soy wax became the wellness-candle darling about fifteen years ago, largely because it offered a plant-based alternative to paraffin at a low cost. You'll find it in the majority of small-batch "natural" candles on the market today.
What it does well: Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin, which means it burns cooler and typically slower, giving a longer burn time relative to cost. It's widely available, easy to work with, and takes fragrance well. It's also biodegradable and cleans up with soap and water.
What to know before buying: The "soy" label comes with a few asterisks worth understanding.
First, most soy wax is not pure soy. The vast majority of commercially available soy wax is hydrogenated soybean oil blended with other waxes — sometimes including paraffin — to improve performance. When a candle says "soy blend," there's no requirement to disclose how much is actually soy, or what the rest of the blend contains.
Second, nearly all soy wax is made from genetically modified soybeans. The US soy supply is approximately 94% GMO, and virtually no commercial soy wax producer can guarantee GMO-free sourcing. For consumers trying to minimize exposure to pesticide residues, this is worth knowing — particularly since soy crops are among the most heavily sprayed agricultural products in the country.
Third, soy requires significant industrial processing to become candle wax. The beans are harvested, solvent-extracted (often using hexane, a petroleum-derived chemical), refined, bleached, and hydrogenated before they become the white, solid wax that goes into candles. The end product is far removed from the bean it started as.
None of this makes soy wax dangerous — it burns cleanly and it's a legitimate step up from paraffin. But it's a long way from the "simple, natural" ingredient it's often marketed as.
Best for: Budget-conscious shoppers looking for a cleaner alternative to paraffin; brands prioritizing cost-effectiveness at scale.
Coconut Wax: The Premium Option
Coconut wax has grown in popularity as a step above soy — softer, creamier, and with a reputation for excellent scent throw and a beautiful, smooth finish. You'll find it in many higher-end "clean" candle brands.
What it does well: Coconut wax burns very cleanly, produces little soot, and has a naturally creamy appearance that looks beautiful in glass vessels. It has excellent fragrance retention, which means it holds scent well even at lower fragrance loads. It's also sustainably harvested — coconut palms are a high-yield crop that doesn't require the land clearing associated with large-scale soy farming.
What to know before buying: The biggest caveat with coconut wax is that truly pure coconut wax is rare in the candle market. Unblended coconut wax is soft, has a very low melting point, and doesn't perform well as a standalone candle material — it can sink, crack, and have difficulty holding its shape, especially in warmer climates.
As a result, most "coconut wax" candles are actually coconut wax blended with other waxes — often soy or paraffin — to give the final product structural stability. The label may say "coconut wax" even if it's only a minority component of the blend.
Like soy, coconut wax also requires industrial processing, including fractionation and hydrogenation, to move from raw coconut oil to candle-ready wax.
Also worth noting: coconut supply chains involve complex global sourcing, and "sustainably harvested" claims are difficult to verify without third-party certification.
Best for: Shoppers who prioritize scent throw and a creamy, luxurious aesthetic; those who want cleaner burning than soy without going full beeswax.
Beeswax: The Original Clean Candle
Beeswax is the oldest candle material in human history — used for thousands of years before petroleum waxes existed — and it remains the purest, most naturally occurring candle wax available today.
What it does well: Beeswax is the only candle wax that exists in pure, usable form without industrial processing. Bees produce it naturally; it's filtered and cleaned, and it's ready to use. There's no hydrogenation, no solvent extraction, no bleaching. What comes out of the hive is genuinely close to what goes into the candle.
It burns hotter than soy or coconut wax, which means it burns more completely — producing very little soot and no tunneling when the candle is properly made. It has a naturally warm, golden glow and a subtle honey-like scent that comes from the wax itself, not from any added fragrance.
Beeswax is also denser than other natural waxes, which means beeswax candles burn significantly longer hour-for-hour than equivalent soy or coconut candles.
What to know before buying: Beeswax is more expensive than soy or coconut wax, which is why it's less common. That cost reflects real things: bees are the ones making it, and genuine beeswax can't be manufactured at scale the way plant-based waxes can. When you see a beeswax candle at a price point suspiciously close to a soy candle, it's worth asking what percentage of the blend is actually beeswax.
Sourcing matters enormously with beeswax. Beeswax quality varies significantly based on what the bees are foraging, how the hive is managed, and how the wax is processed. The best beeswax comes from small, traceable apiaries where you can verify that the bees are healthy and the wax is handled carefully.
Beeswax is also not vegan. For consumers who avoid all animal products, this is a real consideration — coconut or soy wax may be the better fit.
Best for: Health-focused consumers who want the purest, most naturally occurring wax with the longest burn time; those with sensitivities to synthetic additives; anyone who prioritizes full ingredient transparency.

A Note on Blends
The candle industry runs on blends, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that — combining waxes can improve performance in genuine ways. But blends also obscure what you're actually buying.
If a candle label says "coconut-soy blend," you don't know the ratio. If it says "natural wax blend," you don't know what's in it at all. The only way to know what you're burning is to buy from a brand that tells you — specifically, honestly, and completely.

If you need a vegan option: Look for pure coconut wax, and ask specifically whether it's blended with other waxes. A brand that can't tell you the blend ratio probably isn't a brand you want to buy from.
If budget is the primary constraint: Quality soy wax from a transparent brand is a meaningful step up from paraffin — just verify it's not a paraffin blend, and look for non-GMO sourcing if possible.
Whatever you choose, the most important thing is buying from a brand that tells you exactly what's inside. The wax matters. The fragrance matters more. And the willingness to be honest about both matters most of all.
